ABOUT OUR TOPIC:

Employment Law Issues for Small Businesses-  How will your business be impacted by the new Overtime Rules, Expanded NJ Family Leave, and the prohibition of certain employer protections in employment agreements?    

On February 19, 2019 Governor Murphy signed legislation enhancing paid family leave for New Jersey employees. The new law will provide New Jersey employees with some of the most expansive paid leave coverage in the country in that it would increase the amount of time workers could take leave, raise the amount of weekly benefits, and expand the program to employees of smaller employers.  We will provide an overview of the expanded protections and employee eligibility concerns.
 
On March 7, 2019, the Department of Labor announced a proposed rule that would make more than a million more workers eligible for overtime.  We will discuss the new overtime rule and how it could impact your small business workforce and your bottom line.
 
On March 18, 2019 Governor Murphy signed a new law, effective immediately, that prohibits prohibiting non-disclosure provisions in employment contracts and the settlements of discrimination, harassment and retaliation claims under the New Jersey Law Against Discrimination (NJLAD).  The law is applies to all employment contracts, including separation agreements and non-disclosure agreements.  Beyond limiting an employer’s ability to keep claims confidential, the new law requires employers to review and modify their business forms and employment practices.
