Morris County-SHRM Serves Up Work Force Readiness Community Programs

We are committed to increasing the awareness of career path choices, job search and on-the-job success for individuals in need from all ages and backgrounds. Our successful partnerships include local nonprofit organizations and schools such as: Dress for Success Morris County, Homeless Solutions, Neighborhood House, Jersey Battered Women’s Services, Unity Charter School and Abraham Clark High School. Whether working with youth to discover career options, developing on the job success skills for adults or providing workshops for family caregivers to confidently re-enter the workforce, we assist others in taking that critical next step in their career path.

Interested in joining our team? Our initiatives offer a myriad of ways to participate with flexibility to match your work and home life commitments. Whether you have one hour or one evening a month you can join to create workshop content, participate in delivering a workshop session or develop connections with local partners. Want to learn more? After a rigorous review process over the past four months, SHRM and the Families and Work Institute recently announced the New Jersey organizations honored for their best practices in workplace flexibility for 2014.  The honorees include:

Chapter Supports Programs for Dress for Success of Morris County Clients
Are you interested in finding ways to support DFSMC? A Great Opportunity for Volunteers Seeking Short Term Commitment
Liaising with DFSMC Lead Volunteer, Kathi Koufacas, the program received great support from DFS local volunteers along with many chapter members who turned out to provide personalized, one-on-one coaching for the PWG clients. Suzi Sena coordinated the team of HR professionals that readily offered up two hours of knowledge sharing with this terrific group of women. The session focused on the eager group sponging up all that may comes easily to us in our roles about job search search techniques, what derails the interview process and how to better manage through awkward situations that cropped up in prior jobs.

Cites long time avid WFR volunteer leader, Sherrill Curtis, "It's a great way to volunteer - a short time commitment and easy content because we know all of these tips from our experience as HR leaders in our organizations." Most volunteers share their expertise in a one evening, two hour time span. "Our program volunteers report leaving with a great feeling knowing that their guidance has shifted someone to a better path for their career choices."

Morris County-SHRM Board Signs ESGR Statement of Support
With great enthusiasm on September 8 our chapter Board was the first in NJ to sign the Statement of Support for the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve.  The alliance through SHRM national as well as in NJ with this organization offers great opportunities for employers to gain awareness and understanding of the rights and responsibilities under USERRA. 

The push is on across the country, supported by SHRM national, for all chapters and State Councils to give their thumbs up to this organization serving the women and men who at great personal risk give up their personal lives, and risk job loss to keep our daily freedoms.Mr. Rob Van Cleave, SHRM Board Chair, will recognize all SHRM chapters and state councils who participate in the SHRM Statement of Support Challenge at the sHRM 2010 Leadership Conference in November, 2010.  This is unprecedented in the three year history of the employer association statement of support challenge initiative.

"Paving the Way for Veterans” Survey Phase II Breaks Ground in NJ
Garden State Council-SHRM partnered with SHRM National, Cornell University, Kessler Foundation and Tip of the Arrow Foundation to produce the ground breaking national survey reflecting trends for veterans with disabilities in the workplace.

With year end we have wrapped up the data collection process for the survey and look forward to sharing the final report with SHRM members across the country in January, 2011. This was an exciting project to be a part of - our chapter participated in the employer pilot portion. When the full report is published we will post the link on this site. We hope that from it's findings you will become better informed and able to successfully integrate veterans with disabilities into your workplace.


We've got a passion for Pinnacle Awards ...
In November 2006 the chapter was honored with its first SHRM National Pinnacle Award for workforce readiness excellence with the year-long Unity Charter School (Morristown) experiential program "AAA Ponds".  Twelve students, one Momma turtle and a bird house laden garden space (with yes, a small pond!) provided the perfect backdrop for this out of space school to host classes, rest periods and safe play space for after school programs.  

Based on the success of the Unity program, we launched another school based experiential program that yielded the chapter's second SHRM Pinnacle Award in November 2008   Spanning two years and in partnership with the Trinitas School Based Youth Service Program in Roselle, the 18+ students that participated created a special outdoor ADA accessible space for lunch, studying, rehearsing or safely waiting to be picked up from school.   As with the Unity program, these enthusiastic and dedicated students created their own company "Creation for the Youth Nation” with a mission to improve the use and quality of their school spaces.

In each program the students took on the responsibility of various business roles, conducted fund raising programs from a marketing perspective and pitched in the physical sweat to prep the spaces.  Through participation, the students learned skills essential for on the job success while discovering their talents and exploring career options.  Each student made great strides in demonstrating these essential skills while gaining greater self-esteem as well as confidence in their ability to someday take their special talents and make a difference in our world.

Each SHRM Pinnacle Award provided a $1,000 cash award, sponsored by ADP, that was donated to support future school WFR programs.


"Transitions for a Bright Future" 
Last December's chapter event "Transitions for a Bright Future” was a collaboration between our chapter, Caring Capital, Homeless Solutions and Dress for Success Morris County.  Corporate supporters of this interactive event included Walmart and Best Buy.  Under the direction of Susie Schub, President of Caring Capital - Morris County’s award winning arts consulting firm - chapter members gathered to design and build eleven work tables that were donated to each of the HSI clients as they moved into their new homes.  The work tables were decorated and equipped with a laptop (ten pledged by Best Buy at $100 each and one donated by Walmart) along with desk supplies and internet access gift cards.  The 11th desk and laptop was donated to HSI for use by future clients.  Each client also had the option to receive an interview outfit courtesy of Walmart and Dress for Success of Morris County.   

Homeless Solutions selected ten special clients who were ready to transition to their new homes, to also participate in the three month WFR Career Development Certificate program.  The workshops provided: career exploration, job search methods, interviewing techniques, mock interviews, and development of on the job success skills.  The Morris County SHRM Workforce Readiness team provided the content and delivery of "Breaking Through the Barriers" focused on participants learning how to recognize and "rewire" their communication style to achieve on the job success with managers and co-workers.

In addition to the guidance received from HSI case management staff, our chapter is offering a mentoring component available to the HSI clients to support them once they complete the program.
